Governor Josh Green signed two bills to address housing challenges and support nonprofits in Hawaii. HB 420 aims to speed up housing development by setting clear timelines for handling construction defect claims, which could help reduce delays and costs. SB 933 provides $50 million to nonprofit organizations offering services like child care and housing assistance, according to the Office of the Governor.
Senator Jarrett Keohokālole and Representative Lisa Marten supported HB 420, which requires a chance for inspections and repairs before legal action begins, aiming to speed up home repairs and construction. D.R. Horton Hawaii President Tracy Tonaki said, “HB 420 strengthens consumer protections by prioritizing cooperation before litigation so that we can collectively preserve access to essential government backed loan programs.” SB 933 provides funding to support nonprofits facing reduced federal aid. Governor Green said, “This state funding is a critical lifeline,” noting it will help keep community services operating, as reported by the Office of the Governor.
A new bill will support nonprofit services, with a selection committee managing the grant distribution. The Office of Community Services and Aloha United Way, Inc. will handle the administration. Senator Troy Hashimoto and Representative Daniel Holt supported the measure. Details about the two bills and other legislative actions, including videos and photos from the signing ceremonies, are available on the Office of the Governor’s website.
