Houston officials are considering a ban on electric scooters in Downtown, Midtown, and East Downtown. CW39 reported that scooter-related accidents increased from three in 2021 to 21 in 2024, including two deaths. Mayor John Whitmire said most scooter users are visitors who use them for recreation. Police Chief Diaz and the Discovery Green Conservancy raised concerns about improper use. A city council committee meeting is set on Thursday to discuss the proposal and hear public comments.
Downtown Houston residents and business owners are responding to the proposed e-scooter ban. A local parent and e-scooter rider, China, told FOX26 Houston, "No, I don’t think they should be banned because it’s a good way to get around." Georgene Rosales, owner of Htown Scooters, said she prefers stricter regulations instead of a ban and tries to keep customers away from restricted areas. Some business owners also support regulation, pointing to unlicensed vendors as the main issue. One business owner said, "The problem isn’t scooters. The problem is unregulated illegal vendors who are bypassing the city’s own rules."
Houston officials are reviewing the use of electric scooters in the city. The upcoming city council committee meeting will discuss safety concerns, transportation benefits, and economic impacts. The outcome may affect commuting, recreational use, and traffic flow in Downtown Houston.
