If you're planning to hit I-275 in Knox County this evening, you'll need to reroute your journey. Starting at 7 p.m. tonight, the highway will shut down in both directions for bridge construction. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) says the closure is necessary to replace the bridge over Elm Street and Bernard Avenue, and will last until the early hours of Monday, July 21, as detailed in an official announcement.
The detour isn't a minor inconvenience. This evening marks the second time this summer that I-275 has faced a weekend closure, and another round of disruptions is anticipated in the fall. For those looking to bypass the construction area, I-40 and I-640 are offered as alternative routes. However, with the likes of many seeking the same detour, expect heavier traffic than usual.
What's all the commotion for? TDOT is implementing what's known as Accelerated Bridge Construction, or ABC. This technique aims to shorten the bridge's time under construction on the ground, promising a safer experience for the traveling public and the workers on site. "ABC improves site constructability, total project delivery time, and work-zone safety for the traveling public," as stated by the TDOT.
The whole schedule depends on good weather. If it rains, the timeline could change. Replacing a bridge is no easy task, and drivers should expect delays and be extra careful near the work zone. It’s about keeping both drivers and workers safe. TDOT reminds everyone to "Know Before You Go!"—check travel conditions before hitting the road, and don’t text, tweet, or talk on the phone while driving.
