Travelers experienced delays near Arlington as Northbound Interstate 5 reopened following a temporary closure due to multiple brush fires reported yesterday. The Washington State Department of Transportation confirmed that traffic resumed after fire crews adequately contained the blazes. According to KING5, North County Fire Chief Dave Krasky indicated that by last night, the fires were about 90% contained.
The sudden onset of the fires prompted concern, as North County Regional Fire Chief Dave Kraski reported that "five fires were set close together in a short period of time." The specific circumstances leading up to the fires are under investigation. This information came to light in a report by KIRO 7, highlighting the quick succession in which the fires appeared to have started.
Further disruptions were noted as State Route 530 at one point was fully blocked due to another brush fire, but traffic there too was restored as the way was cleared. Drivers had been advised to look for detour routes and to expect delays in the Arlington area as authorities and fire services worked to manage the situation. The additional brush fire near the Stilly Bridge was also noted by the Washington State Patrol. However, with the fires now under control, normal traffic flow has resumed, according to updates from transportation officials.
In a quick response to the environmental threat, multiple fire agencies collaborated to tackle the fires strategically. The reason behind these fires remains to be determined, with ongoing investigations aiming to unravel the cause. FOX 13 Seattle reported that the Washington State Patrol is deeply involved in examining the causes of all the fires including the one near the Stilly Bridge.
