Residents in Ionia County have been put on alert after the Ionia County Health Department issued an advisory about a suspected harmful algal bloom in Woodard Lake. As reported by FOX 17, people are being leery about this specific occurrence, differing from most algal blooms, which aren't serious.
The health department, along with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, has strongly advised against coming into contact with scummy or discolored water in the lake, which can appear blue-green, or exhibit a green sheen, according to WOODTV. They also caution against allowing pets to drink or touch the affected water, citing the potential for toxins produced by certain cyanobacteria to cause liver, nervous system and skin harm.
An advisory on WILX further elucidates that ingesting or even touching the water can result in a slew of health issues ranging from rashes and allergic reactions to severe gastrointestinal distress and liver dysfunction. The health officials have also made it clear: Do not eat fish caught from Woodard Lake, nor should the water be used for cooking or watering plants.
The health department also provided a picture guide for identifying these treacherous blooms. They mention sunlight, low water, calm conditions, warm temperatures, alongside excess nutrients like phosphorus or nitrogen, as contributing factors. If anyone has been exposed to the algal bloom, they advise immediate rinsing off and seeking medical attention should symptoms arise, as per WOODTV.
