The cleanup of Amala Place and Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului was completed by county crews using heavy equipment over a two-day period. Roads and public areas that had been previously occupied are set to reopen to the public last Saturday morning. A statement from the Mayor’s office said, "The County remains committed to ensuring that public lands are safe, accessible and well-maintained for the entire community." Mayor Richard Bissen also noted continued support for the houseless community in the area, according to the County of Maui.

Before the cleanup, officials worked with community agencies for over a month to prepare people staying illegally in the area. As a result, 23 individuals were placed in shelters through efforts by the County of Maui and nonprofit groups. "Their work, in addition to the efforts of many, such as Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center, Maui Mental Health Kōkua, Hunaman and Aloha House, ensured that anyone unsheltered in the area could receive help and support if desired," said County of Maui Director of Public Affairs Mahina Martin. Between January and May, the Amala and Kanahā areas had 159 emergency calls and reports of property damage, environmental issues, and rat infestations.

The County of Maui cleaned up Amala Place and Kanahā Beach Park by towing 16 vehicles, removing 13 tons of trash, and repainting restrooms. No arrests were made during the operation. Belongings left behind can be stored for 30 days, and owners can call (808) 318-0370 for information.
