In a recent sweep by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), ten illegal firearms were seized, and multiple teenagers were arrested over the span of one week. This enforcement action was a strategic response to a spate of gun violence that has unsettled the Kalamazoo community.

Details released by KDPS reveal that the arrests took place between July 7 and July 14 and involved individuals ranging in age from 15 to 19. During one incident on July 7, as reported by FOX 17, a 16-year-old was apprehended after a foot chase, and on July 14, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old were arrested after one tried to flee from the authorities.

According to WOODTV, the KDPS Chief David Boysen expressed deep concerns about the growing problem of gun possession among youth. "Far too many of our young folks are illegally carrying guns and this not only puts them at risk, but it puts their families at risk and the entire community at risk," Boysen said in a video posted online.

To help curb the problem, Boysen highlighted the department's gun amnesty program, which allows parents to anonymously surrender firearms found in the possession of their children to local churches participating in the initiative. This strategy is meant to reduce the number of weapons on the street without incriminating the minors involved. Information on participating churches can be found on the KDPS website.

Captain Mike Furgeson of KDPS underscored the gravity of the situation in a statement obtained by FOX 17, stating, "These operations are in direct response to the gun violence we've seen in our community," and he assured that focused enforcement would persist into the summer. Meanwhile, KDPS calls upon the public to report any information about illegal firearms to KVET at 269-337-8880 or by using Silent Observer at 269-343-2100 or the "P3Tips" app, as noted by WWMT.
