A 38-year-old woman from Kansas, while visiting Kalalau Beach in Kaua'i, found herself in the midst of an emergency situation last Friday. The unidentified kayaker sustained an injury, prompting a multi-agency rescue operation that ended successfully with her being airlifted to safety and receiving the medical attention needed.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD) was quick to respond after receiving a distress call at approximately 10:50 a.m., with members from the Hanalei Fire Station, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and American Medical Response mobilizing to aid the injured visitor. They arrived at the scene by 12:10 p.m., and, according to a preliminary report obtained by the Kauai County's press release, found the woman under trees on the beach, being assisted by other beachgoers.
Once on site, rescue personnel assessed the woman's injury, which was serious enough to warrant immediate medical intervention. Her ankle was splinted on the beach while bystanders and rescuers worked in tandem to transport her from her makeshift shelter under the trees to Air 1's landing zone. The community's spirit, and willingness to lend a hand were evidently on display amid the unfolding drama.
As detailed in the Kauai County's official press announcement, the injured kayaker was then loaded onto the helicopter, which whisked her away to Princeville Airport. There, at around 12:45 p.m., she was carefully transferred to an ambulance, where emergency personnel took over her care. The efficient and swift response from KFD, coupled with the outpouring of assistance from bystanders, underscored a joint effort in the face of urgent need, set against the backdrop of Kalalau Beach's natural splendor.
