A two-vehicle crash happened on Kūhiō Highway near Hoʻokui Road in Kīlauea on Sunday morning, resulting in several injuries and a road closure. The County of Kauai reported that the collision occurred at around 7:45 a.m. and involved a white 2022 Honda and a blue 2025 Mazda, both multipurpose vehicles.
A 64-year-old man from Anahola was driving a Honda northbound when it crossed the center line and hit a southbound Mazda carrying three people from Washington State. The crash caused major damage to both vehicles and closed a portion of the highway. Traffic on Kolo Road was diverted for about 3 hours and 45 minutes while the Kauaʻi Police Department's Traffic Safety Section investigated the scene, according to the County of Kauai.
A crash involving a Honda and a Mazda resulted in serious injuries. The Honda driver was critically injured and taken to Wilcox Medical Center. "The driver of the Mazda, a 72-year-old man, and one of the passengers, a 69-year-old woman, were treated at Wilcox Medical Center and later released." Another passenger from the Mazda, also a 69-year-old woman, was flown to Straub Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment. Speed may have been a factor, and toxicology results are pending. The investigation is still ongoing. "Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to contact Officer Henshaw at (808) 241-1616," as stated by the County of Kauai.
