The political landscape in Charlotte, North Carolina continues to evolve as Krista Bokhari steps up to file for the District 6 City Council seat, a position previously held by her husband, Tariq Bokhari. According to QC News, Krista Bokhari made her intention official on Monday at the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections. Her husband vacated the seat to accept an appointment within the Trump Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Krista Bokhari, who had aimed to fill her husband's seat through appointment earlier this year, ultimately did not secure the seat due to Mayor Vi Lyles casting the deciding vote in favor of Edwin Peacock III. However, with Peacock stating a firm intention to not seek re-election, as reported by WCNC Charlotte, the field is set for a new representative.
Bokhari's platform focuses squarely on public safety, transportation, and transparency. She has been vocal about the current state of the city's politics, alleging that the city council descended into disarray in the aftermath of her husband's resignation. "Within a week of Tariq leaving office, our council took a nosedive into chaos. I think that is telling," Bokhari told WCNC Charlotte. She has also made waves earlier this year by calling for the resignation of CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings and critiqued the city attorney's handling of a settlement situation involving her husband.
In the race for the south Charlotte seat, Krista Bokhari is not without competition, with Democrat Kimberly Owens and fellow Republican Sary Chakra also vying for the position. The general election is expected to be a competitive bout, as this seat is one of only two held by Republicans on the 11-member council, as WFAE reports. Each candidate brings a distinct vision to the table, promising an eagerly watched race by the constituents of District 6.
