In the wake of a brush fire in Laguna Beach, authorities arrested a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of arson, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. The fire, which started on Monday afternoon, necessitated evacuations in the affected neighborhoods but was contained at just over 4 acres by firefighting crews by the evening. Witnesses had initially reported seeing a juvenile setting off fireworks in the area, which was the suspected cause of the Rancho Fire, leading to the police investigation and subsequent arrest.
After extensive questioning, and the analysis of available video footage, a 13-year-old was identified and taken into custody by Laguna Beach police, as per information obtained by FOX LA. The video allegedly showed the teen lighting a firework, and fleeing the scene where the fire originated. Despite the arrest, the teen was released to his parents since Orange County Juvenile Hall did not book him due to the absence of injuries, or immediate threat to buildings from the fire.
In a statement obtained by CBS Los Angeles, the Laguna Beach Police Department emphasized their quick response in coordination with the community, which played a crucial role in the quick apprehension of the suspect. "This case is a perfect example of what makes Laguna Beach unique -- an engaged community that works hand in hand with its police department. When our residents speak up, we’re able to respond quickly and effectively. Public safety is a shared responsibility, and this outcome reflects that," explained Chief Jeff Calvert.
Laguna Beach Mayor Alex Rounaghi expressed his disappointment about the incident, lamenting the irresponsibility of using fireworks which led to the fire. "This fire was suspected to be caused by fireworks, but we don’t have any further information beyond that at this time," he told the community during an update, according to NBC Los Angeles. This wildfire emerges as one, of the several California has faced; with nearly 4,000 wildfires having burned more than 182,000 acres this year, a significant increase from the previous year's figures reported around the same time.
Residents who were forced to leave their homes due to evacuation orders have since been allowed to return. The forward progress of the fire was halted thanks to the efforts of firefighters and aircraft capable of making water and fire retardant drops. The teen's case has been submitted to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, where charges are being considered, as reported by sources including FOX LA and CBS Los Angeles.
