Las Cruces residents have a new opportunity to cast their vision for the future of one of the city's key community hubs. The municipal government is launching a master planning project for Young Park, a vital outdoor space situated at 850 South Walnut Street. As the city experiences growth, officials are looking at enhancing and preserving Young Park for upcoming generations, ensuring it remains an inclusive, accessible haven for leisure and culture.
Katherine Harrison-Rogers, the Parks and Recreation Planning and Construction administrator, emphasized the importance of community involvement: "As Las Cruces continues to grow, it’s important that our public spaces grow with us," as noted by the City of Las Cruces. Harrison-Rogers highlighted the park's role in the community, saying, "The Young Park Master Plan will help ensure the park meets the evolving needs of the community, and remains a welcoming, inclusive space for all."
Public participation is considered a pillar for the success of this initiative. City authorities are reaching out to residents for their narratives, ideas, and aspirations for the park. Locals can join in the conversation during the scheduled public engagement events. There will be an assembly on Friday, July 18, at 5:30 p.m. at Lynn Middle School, and on Saturday, July 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Farmers and Crafts Market of Las Cruces.
Focused on understanding the current use of the space, the effort will acknowledge challenges faced by Young Park and strategize enhancements accordingly. These enhancements are aimed at enriching the park's already notable features, including a scenic pond, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and tennis courts, a popular spot for fishing as well. By obtaining input from various segments of society, the city hopes to cultivate a diverse range of perspectives in the master plan. Locals eager to provide feedback or learn more about the project are invited to the consultations, signifying their collective stake in the park’s future.
