A lightning strike sparked a vehicle fire at Fort Custer Recreation Area last night, prompting response from the Ross-Augusta and Galesburg Charleston Fire Departments. As reported by WZZM 13, images from the scene depict a pickup truck engulfed in flames, shrouded with thick smoke within the confines of a parking lot.
The force of nature disregarded the presence of a human, who was inside the pickup when the lightning unleashed its electrical charge; remarkably, the person emerged unscathed. Amidst this harrowing event that could have veered into tragedy, no injuries were reported. The National Weather Service had previously announced a severe thunderstorm watch for most of lower Michigan, encompassing parts of northwest Indiana as well as northeast Illinois, reflecting the pressing climate that preluded the incident.
Details retrieved from a social media post by the Ross-Augusta Fire Department, reveal that multiple vehicles, including Engines 411, 421, and Tanker 461, were dedicated to the response efforts. During the incident, RAFD also responded to two other calls, showing how emergency crews managed multiple situations at once with speed and skill.
