As the countdown to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics ticks ever closer, organizers have lifted the veil on the eagerly anticipated competition schedule — and it's brimming with twists and groundbreaking moves. In a break from tradition, athletics will debut in the first half of the Games, with swimming slated for the latter part, earmarking an unprecedented shakeup for these staple events.
According to NBC Los Angeles, LA28 organizers have corporated a novel strategy in the scheduling, seemingly to allow for the transformation of the SoFi Stadium into the biggest swimming venue in Olympic history. The traditional sports such as field hockey, basketball, and rugby sevens, along with the addition of cricket, will kick off the action on July 12, two days before the Opening Ceremony. Meanwhile, triathlon athletes will have the honor of vying for the very first medals against the scenic coastline of Venice Beach on July 15.
Sporting a rich Olympic history, the LA Memorial Coliseum is set to share the Opening Ceremony responsibilities with the technologically advanced 2028 Stadium, laying the stage for what is promised to be a spectacular beginning to the Games. In a statement obtained by CBS News Los Angeles, LA Mayor Karen Bass expressed pride in the fact that the first medals will be presented at Venice Beach, heralding a Games aimed at celebrating every neighborhood. The Games will conclude at the same historic Coliseum, where the Closing Ceremony will take place on July 30.
But it's not just the glitz and spectacle of the international competition that's making waves. The PlayLA youth sports programme, a cornerstone of LA's Olympic legacy, has surpassed an impressive one million registrations. As detailed by the International Olympic Committee's news release, PlayLA is pivotal in democratizing sports for children, promoting physical activity and potentially grooming future Olympians. Reynold Hoover, LA28's Chief Executive Officer, revealed the dual celebration of legacy and future of the Olympics in Los Angeles, as the PlayLA program and competition schedule take shape.
