Motorists in Los Angeles have just been hit with a fresh alert: keep your eyes peeled for so-called 'tow truck bandits'. In a recent advisory, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office warned that these deceitful operators are descending upon auto accident scenes pretending to be your roadside saviors, only to turn into your newest financial nightmare.

The DA's Office detailed how these bandits listen in on radio communications to beat you, and even legitimate tow services, to the punch, according to a post on their Instagram page, these scammers then haul away your damaged car and later hit you with exorbitant towing fees or hold your vehicle hostage till you pay up their ballooned prices, with the DA's Office announcing sternly, "This is fraud—and it’s illegal."

For those unfortunate enough to meet with an accident, the DA's Office advises caution: if a tow truck shows up unannounced, without a call from you or the cops, that's a giant red flag. A tow driver pressuring you to go to a specific repair shop or offering a ridshare should also make you suspicious.

Protective measures were shared by the DA's Office, which include waiting for law enforcement before arranging a tow, confirming whether a tow truck has been dispatched by an official entity and which company it is, and double-checking with your insurance or the California Highway Patrol before allowing any towing to occur, and importantly, drivers should avoid signing any documents until they've talked to their insurance provider. Lastly, the DA's Office and KTLA reported that victims or witnesses of such tow truck swindles are urged to ring up the California Department of Insurance at 800-927-4357.

Scams like these thrive in the chaos following a collision, as the 'tow truck bandits' masquerade precise at that instant when victims are most vulnerable, looking to render aid and instead, they pilfer through deception; thus, awareness and adhering to the recommendations made by the DA's Office could be the shield that guards against these roadside ruses.
