A tragic incident unfolded at Bald River Falls, where a 37-year-old man drowned, as confirmed by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office (MCSO). Officials responded to the emergency on Sunday evening and worked through the night in an effort to locate and retrieve the victim. The man, a Loudon County native visiting from Florida, was not identified by name in immediate reports.
First responders, accompanied by the MCSO Dive Team, were called to the scene along River Road near the falls. The scene became an urgent search operation with Sheriff Tommy Jones urging locals to steer clear of the area to allow professionals to thoroughly and safely conduct their work. "Please pray for the family members of those involved in this tragic incident," Jones implored, in a sentiment echoed across the following press releases. This statement was obtained by WATE.
The MCSO was quick to inform the public via social media that evening, marking the situation's escalation around 8:30 p.m., and concluded by posting at 11:30 p.m. that the operations at the falls had ended. The sheriff's office promptly notified the family of the man, but details regarding the recovery of the body or the circumstances leading to the cessation of the search were not immediately clarified, according to WBIR report.
While the events continue to unfold, reportedly, updates from the MCSO promise to shed more light on the situation. The sheriff's office has yet to release additional information regarding the investigation and further inquiries into the incident at Bald River Falls. MCSO's communication strategy has aimed to keep the public accurately informed and to likely also allow the family some semblance of privacy during this difficult time. The initial alert and updates were available through a post shared by WVLT.
