A fatal scooter crash near the University of Texas at Austin campus took the life of a man, authorities have confirmed. This incident, which occurred in the 2200 block of Guadalupe Street, colloquially known as "the Drag," was reported by both the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD) and the Austin Police Department (APD). The UTPD has clarified that the individual was not affiliated with the university, as CBS Austin reported.
APD provided more details about the grim scene, recording the time of the incident around 1:45 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of West 22nd Street and Guadalupe Street, a man was discovered bleeding and unresponsive on the ground. Lying on the ground and bleeding, a caller reported seeing the individual, who was pronounced dead at the scene. With the victim estimated to be between the ages of 20 and 40, authorities treated the e-scooter crash as an accident, yet they have not ruled out reviewing potential video evidence from the area. The UT Police Department also responded to the whereabouts of the crash, as KXAN disclosed.
In April 2024, Austin implemented tighter regulations for electric scooters in response to safety concerns and the disorderly parking of these vehicles on sidewalks. Companies such as Lime and Bird are presently the only licensed vendors, with the city capping the number of e-scooters to 3,700 and 3,000, respectively. Discussions previously considered reducing the speed limit for these scooters between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., but no formal speed limit adjustments have been made to date. Currently, there is no minimum age requirement for e-scooter riders in Austin, nor is there a mandate for a driver's license to operate them.
With a booming population and an increasing number of alternative transportation options, the city continues grappling with managing these modes of travel while safeguarding its inhabitants.
