A man in Cutlerville is in critical condition after a standoff with Kent County sheriff’s deputies that led to an exchange of gunfire this morning. According to details provided by WOOD TV, the confrontation occurred in the area of Fontenelle Street SE and S. Division Avenue in Gaines Township following a reported domestic assault at 9 a.m.
Kent County Undersheriff Bryan Muir, as stated by WZZM 13, explained that initial reports described the suspect as an "older white man" who was armed with a gun and threatening others at the residence, as well as neighboring individuals. Muir said that the man pointed the weapon at officers upon their arrival.
The deputies, having been greeted with a pointed gun by the man, attempted to negotiate with him via loudspeaker and phone. The tense situation escalated when the man, after retreating into his residence, emerged, and subsequently hid and aimed a long gun at the officials. He fired multiple shots at authorities, which led deputies to return fire, injuring him at least once, according to Muir's interview with MLive.
In the aftermath of the incident, responders requested additional support, including armored vehicles and drones, indicating the gravity of the situation. Following the exchange of gunfire, the man was hospitalized and last listed in critical condition. Muir noted that the incident's proximity to a busy road and an auto dealership necessitated a robust response, as mentioned by WZZM 13, "We take that as a very serious threat."
While no law enforcement officials reported injuries, two deputies have been placed on administrative leave per department policy in the wake of the shooting incident. The ongoing investigation of the matter has been handed over to the Wyoming Police Department, which adheres to standard protocols for such cases. The public, having been temporarily advised to stay clear of the area and seek shelter, was later informed that there was no longer a threat to their safety.
