Lacing up for a sports-filled fall, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is setting the stage for a new girls volleyball league aimed at kids ages 11-13. Joining a diverse roster of recreational options, this girls-only league is designed to create a competitive yet enjoyable atmosphere for developing athletes to learn and show off their burgeoning volleyball skills. An announcement from the Mecklenburg County yesterday confirmed that enrollment for the league starts tomorrow.

"By offering more girls-only leagues, we are creating fun, competitive environments where girls can learn proper fundamentals, develop strong skills, and thrive through sports," Kiana Brooks, a recreation program supervisor with Park and Recreation's youth sports, was quoted saying. Participants can expect to quickly learn to play a six-game season, with the added possibility for postseason play thrown into the mix, as per Mecklenburg County.

The league's games are scheduled for Tuesday evenings, with locations including Ray’s Splash Planet and Wallace Pruitt Recreation Center. As for the practice sessions, they will oscillate, dependent upon team and site alignments. Interested parties have until September 5 to register, with a $90 fee for county residents and slightly more, $108, for those residing outside the county limits.

To ease the financial strain on some families, the Park and Recreation department is stepping up to offer scholarships. They are readily available to those who qualify as part of the department’s objective to never let money be a barrier to play. Families in need of assistance are encouraged to reach out directly to their local recreation center or to connect with the Youth Sports staff at 980-314-1118 or via email to [email protected], to see if they can benefit from this helping hand.

Apart from volleyball, the county is eager to see enrollment in other fall sports leagues, including a newly minted girls flag football league for middle schoolers and freshman high schoolers. Like volleyball, the flag football registration window is from tomorrow to September 5. Coed youth sports haven't been left out either, with flag football and soccer registration closing on July 31. However, those dragging their feet should take note: starting the following day for all sports, a late fee of $10 will be assessed for registration tardiness.
