The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a heat advisory for the region, warning of heat index values reaching up to 107 degrees. The advisory, which remains in effect until 9 PM CDT Sunday, encompasses parts of East Arkansas, North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee. Residents are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, which can increase significantly during such extreme conditions.
In addition to the ongoing advisory, an "Extreme Heat Watch" is slated to begin from Monday afternoon, extending through Wednesday evening. According to the NWS, Memphis, dangerously hot conditions are expected, with heat index values possibly rising up to 115 degrees. This would mark a height of swelter burdening households and streets alike, casting a stifling pall over the southern heartland.
For those seeking respite from the heat, the weather service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned environments, avoiding direct sunlight, and keeping a watchful eye on relatives and neighbors. "Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events," the NWS Memphis stated, underscoring the urgency for the community to remain vigilant.
