Memphis Tigers basketball legend William Bedford has been named to the 2025 American Basketball Hall of Fame, joining an elite roster of individuals who have left a lasting imprint on the sport at various levels, from high school to the professional leagues. Bedford, who became a symbol of prowess during his mid-1980s tenure with the Tigers, led the team in key statistics and is remembered for both his collegiate and professional achievements, according to a Gotigersgo.com report.
The induction ceremony, slated for August 17 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, Michigan, will honor Bedford's distinguished career; he has previously been recognized with an inclusion into the Memphis Tigers Basketball Hall of Fame, which highlights his rebounding, blocking, and scoring prowess, in addition to his extraordinary 58.4% field goal percentage in the 1985-86 season as noted by Action News 5, and despite not starting organized basketball until high school, Bedford's rapid development on the court garnered multiple all-conference and all-American accolades during his time at Memphis State University, where he also helped lead the team to a Final Four appearance in 1985, showcasing a talent that carried into his NBA tenure which included a championship ring and a still-standing league record for three-point shooting in a game.
Bedford's accolades include Metro Conference All-Freshman Team honors in 1984, First-Team All-Metro Conference selections, and his record for the most blocks in a single season by a Memphis junior with 86 blocks, a testament to his defensive prowess. His record is complemented by his ranking as fourth in total blocks (234) in the program's history and a mark on the Tigers’ all-time scoring list, sitting at 26th with 1,225 career points, according to Local Memphis details.
"It’s an incredible honor to be recognized alongside the legends who came before me, I’m truly blessed," Bedford told Local Memphis; the towering 7-footer joins over 85 other individuals previously honored by the ABHOF since its establishment in 2019, a hall that includes household names like Kobe Bryant, Meadowlark Lemon, and Isiah Thomas among others, with his significant influence within the game of basketball, both as a formidable center for the Tigers and as a notable NBA player, his induction being a reflection of his enduring impact and his unique narrative within the sport.
