The Memphis Zoo has announced the death of one of its most cherished residents, Kwizera the gorilla, who passed away on the morning of July 6th. Found unresponsive during a routine check, the 37-year-old gorilla's sudden departure has left both her human caretakers and gorilla family grieving. According to a statement from the Memphis Zoo, cited by Local Memphis News, "Despite swift action and lifesaving efforts from our dedicated keepers and veterinary team, she could not be revived." The emotional impact on the zoo staff was evident as they were given the opportunity to surround Kwizera as she passed, acknowledging the strong bonds formed over the years.
Kwizera has been a significant figure at the Memphis Zoo since her arrival in 2009 from Buffalo, New York. She played a crucial role in establishing the zoo's first cohesive gorilla group in more than 15 years, reported Action News 5. Renowned for her clever and spirited personality, Kwizera was known for her unique ways of communication, which often charmed her caretakers and visitors alike. Whether it was knocking bedding off her perch or greeting her caregivers by patting her arms, Kwizera's presence was a constant source of joy.
The sudden loss of Kwizera, as per Local Memphis, comes as a surprise, with female gorillas typically living into their 50s under human care. The zoo's statement highlighted the special relationship between the keepers and Kwizera, likening it to losing a colleague and a dear friend. A full necropsy has been performed, and results are pending. In the meantime, they ask for the public's compassion and respect as they mourn this unexpected loss.
In remembrance of Kwizera, the Memphis Zoo encourages those who wish to pay tribute to share memories or photos on the zoo's social media, or make donations to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in her honor, as suggested by The Commercial Appeal. Additionally, a memorial has been set up next to the gorilla statue on the Avenue of Animals near the Zoo entrance, where visitors can leave flowers or notes in memory of the beloved gorilla.
