Michigan's concerted effort to bring sexual assault offenders to justice saw another stride as Dustin Lee Sutton, 34, formerly of Cadillac, Michigan, received a 6-15 year prison sentence for his crimes committed more than a decade ago. The conviction, part of the statewide Operation Survivor Justice, was announced by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Sutton, who had been living in Washington State, admitted to sexually assaulting a minor during a 2014 stay at a relative's home in Manton, Michigan.

After the incident came to light in 2015, Michigan State Police investigated the allegations. Charges were filed the same year, yet Sutton was not extradited back to Michigan until December 2024. Finally, under the aegis of Operation Survivor Justice, the U.S. Marshals Service managed to quickly bring Sutton to Michigan where he pled guilty to three counts of Third-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. According to a statement from Nessel, "Operation Survivor Justice is delivering justice for victims here in Michigan and taking known sexual offenders out of communities all across the country," as reported by the Attorney General's Office.

The victim, who is now an adult, shared a powerful impact statement in court, expressing the lasting trauma she has suffered. "I have spent a decade trying to heal myself without answers. Anger is the only thing that comes up when I talk/think about this. I feel sick to my stomach still thinking of him touching my body and not being able to protect myself," she revealed, emphasizing the enduring effects of the ordeal. She further stated, "People like this are a danger to society and children especially. I am glad I decided to go through with this to prove that the trauma of what happens may dull mentally by blocking it out, but the body? That never forgets," as noted by the Attorney General's Office.

This case represents one of several attempts by the Michigan Department of Attorney General to address past sexual offenses. With coordination from local county prosecutors and the U.S. Marshals Service, Operation Survivor Justice aims to surely locate, apprehend, and return fugitive offenders with outstanding sexual assault warrants to Michigan, holding them accountable for their actions.
