Minneapolis has made a strategic move in appointing Adam Fetcher as the city's inaugural Chief Communications Officer, a role created to strengthen the city's connection with its constituents. Mayor Jacob Frey officiated the swearing-in ceremony and outlined that Fetcher's responsibilities will include crafting messages aimed at informing, empowering, and engaging Minneapolis’ diverse population.
In a press release posted on the City of Minneapolis website, Fetcher's role is highlighted as a tool for fostering community cohesion and combating the spread of misinformation. Fetcher, who has a background in both government and the private sector, brings a set of experiences that the mayor believes will be instrumental in promoting the city’s daily progress and its dedicated staff. In his statement, Mayor Frey said, "Adam brings vision, sophistication, and real-world experience to how we think about our city—and how we tell its story.”
Adam Fetcher's return to public service is not just a homecoming but a testament to his commitment to civic duty, particularly in a climate where public service faces scrutiny and skepticism. Fetcher expressed his honor in rejoining the public sphere, emphasizing the importance of local government as a defense against societal rifts. He told the City of Minneapolis, "Local government is a vital bulwark against hate and divisiveness, and, when we work together and keep focused on our wide swaths of agreement, Minneapolis can lead the nation as a pinnacle of progressive ingenuity and inclusivity."
The newly minted officer plans to enhance Minneapolis residents’ interaction with their local government and bridge the gaps where trust may be lacking. Fetcher considers communications pivotal in ensuring residents feel heard and served by their government. “I’m grateful for Mayor Frey’s commitment to using communications as a tool to better meet the needs of our residents, especially those who feel left behind or feel a lack of trust in government,” Fetcher elaborated.
Before entering this new chapter in city management, Fetcher operated a consulting agency, Big Future Mission & Message, which he had co-founded in Minneapolis in 2024. His experiences span high-profile governmental roles and prominent positions in major corporations, including stints at outdoor apparel giant Patagonia and the electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian. Fetcher resides in Minneapolis’ Ward 13, where he lives with his wife and their two young daughters.
