Minneapolis residents have reason to celebrate as the iconic Stone Arch Bridge, a staple for pedestrians and cyclists, has been reopened fully ahead of the project's anticipated completion date. According to Minneapolis Parks, the bridge was initially expected to be out of commission for a full two years. Instead, Minnesota's Department of Transportation (MnDOT) along with Gov. Tim Walz shared the good news of its early completion, much to the joy of locals and businesses alike that rely on the iconic crossing.
The work on the Stone Arch Bridge, which has served as a connection between downtown Minneapolis and Northeast Minneapolis communities since its inception, began in spring 2024 and was centered on extensive repair and preservation efforts. "day we celebrate the hard work and collaboration of so many who went above and beyond to finish this project months ahead of schedule," Gov. Tim Walz stated in an announcement obtained by Minneapolis Parks. Such improvements are intended to slow deterioration and greatly extend the bridge's lifespan.
Officials and community members recently gathered to mark the occasion with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event. MnDOT Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger expressed gratitude for community support during the restoration period. "We want to sincerely thank the community for its support and patience as we worked to restore this important recreational site and connection between downtown Minneapolis and the Northeast Minneapolis communities," Daubenberger said.
Attention does turn, however, to a brief interim when the bridge will close once more. The public should be aware that the Stone Arch Bridge will shut down on Saturday, August 26, to ensure safety during the Aquatennial fireworks display. But festivities won't be dampened for long. MnDOT has put together a community celebration slated for August 9, which will feature family-friendly activities, food trucks, and live entertainment, echoing the collective spirit invigorated by the bridge's restoration.
