A Modesto man was recently convicted on charges related to illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, in addition to methamphetamine possession, according to a post by the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office. Jose Angel Vasquez, age 39, was found guilty by a jury of being a felon in possession of ammunition and a firearm, a conviction that carries significant weight due to his prior serious violent felony record.

Law enforcement officers had responded to a disturbance call on December 27, 2024, where Vasquez reportedly made threats while brandishing a 9mm handgun; the same weapon was later located in some bushes near where he was detained and was identified as the one used in the said threats, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney's social media post. During his apprehension, deputies discovered methamphetamine on Vasquez, which added to the charges against him, methamphetamine being a substance whose possession is a violation of the law and an indication of the kind of ties to the underworld life that Vasquez seemingly could not cut.

Jose Angel Vasquez is scheduled for sentencing on August 14 and faces the possibility of returning to prison. The Stanislaus County District Attorney, Jeff Laugero, issued a statement following the conviction, highlighting the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the justice system to address repeat offenses involving firearms and controlled substances.
