Montgomery County has officially launched its latest initiative aimed at preserving and enhancing its green spaces. Dubbed Montco Forever Green, the grant program aims to help the county's 62 municipalities and nonprofit partners get funding to preserve and enhance open space. Starting September 1, as reported by Montgomery County's official website, local governments and organizations can submit their applications to protect our precious parks and pastures.

The Montco Forever Green program goes beyond preserving the county’s natural beauty — it’s a strategic investment in Montgomery County’s long-term prosperity and public health. The initiative supports higher property values, job growth, reduced pollution and flood risk, and increased access to outdoor recreation, all without placing a significant financial burden on residents. Neil K. Makhija, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, highlighted the financial perks of preserving greenery: "Preserving Montgomery County’s natural spaces is an investment that returns nearly $3 billion in housing value, almost $200 million in annual stormwater management savings, and an annual economic boom of about $160 million," as the county's announcement details.

Grants are available for up to $500,000 each, with applicants required to contribute at least 25% in matching funds. This year, Montgomery County has allocated $2 million through its Capital Improvement Plan, signaling a strong commitment to protecting the green spaces that offer residents a vital place to relax and recharge. From expansive rural landscapes to small urban parks, a wide range of projects are eligible for support.

Montgomery County has a strong track record when it comes to protecting open spaces, with two landmark programs in the 1990s and 2000s that helped set a lasting standard.
