Bronx commuters relying on the 5 train are facing a week of disruptions as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) undertakes track replacements. The work, which will continue until the early hours of July 7, has led to the suspension of service between Dyre Avenue and East 180th Street. Commuters will have to find alternate routes, with the MTA providing some options to ease the inconvenience.
During this service interruption, the MTA has arranged for free shuttle buses to connect affected passengers, running between Dyre Avenue and East 180th Street. Additionally, according to PIX11, "There will be no 5 trains overnight," placing an extra strain on late-night travelers. The 5 train will operate as usual between East 180th Street and Flatbush Avenue on weekdays, and to Bowling Green during evenings and weekends. The MTA advises riders can connect to 2 trains along White Plains Road via crosstown buses as well.
The track replacements are not the only source of trouble for the 5 line this week. An incident this morning saw delays extend further when a train's brakes were reportedly pulled at 149th Street-Grand Concourse. The MTA is urging commuters to stay updated on the latest service changes and plan their journeys accordingly, with the hope that normal service will resume following the scheduled maintenance work.
For those who rely heavily on the 5 train, the temporary service suspension marks a significant disruption to the usual pace of life in the Bronx. While News 12 the Bronx notes that weekday express rush hour service will run in peak direction with some trains extending to and from Nereid Avenue, this solution may not fully mitigate the pause in the regular flow of city transit. Commuters are encouraged to stay engaged with MTA apps and notifications to navigate the week as smoothly as possible.
