Off-Broadway's landscape expands with the play "Duke and Roya," which presents a cross-cultural love story incorporating hip-hop elements. As reported by ABC7 New York, the production features Jay Ellis as "Duke," an American rapper, and Stephanie Nur as "Roya," his Afghan interpreter, in a narrative set against the backdrop of war-torn Kabul.
Though Ellis is recognized for his role on "Insecure," "Duke & Roya" is his first time performing rap on stage. Speaking to NY1, Stephanie Nur described "Roya" as a character who adds emotional depth and lyrical resonance to the story. Ellis shared that the experience highlighted the value of physical and vocal presence in storytelling, skills he intends to carry into his television and film work.
Featuring original hip-hop music throughout, the play tells a story of love crossing the divide between contrasting cultures. It addresses themes of survival and difficult choices, according to Stephanie Nur, as reported by ABC7 New York.
The idea for "Duke and Roya" originated over ten years ago when writer Charles Randolph-Wright read a book about Afghan women. In an interview with ABC7 New York, Randolph-Wright suggested that the play challenges the saying that love conquers all. Actors such as Noma Dumezweni and Dariush Kashani have noted that the production provides a "stirring blend" for audiences who appreciate music and evolving storytelling in theater.
