Over the weekend, residents across the city took to the streets with a mission to tidy up their neighborhoods. The Mayor's Neighborhood Engagement Office, in collaboration with the Department of Public Works, organized the 'Love Your City: Citywide Cleanup' event to specifically target main corridors within the five council districts. According to the event details released on the city's official website, the two-day endeavor, which took place on February 1 and 2, drew in more than 200 eager volunteers.
The call to rejuvenate the city's thoroughfares sparked considerable community involvement. Xavier University and International High School students, alongside members of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. and Familias Unidas en Acción (Families United in Action), were noted to quickly mobilize and answer the cleanup call. The results were tangible—participants managed to collect over 215 bags of trash and 66 bulk items, while also cleaning nearly 40 catch basins throughout the cityscape. The effort didn't go unnoticed, with Mayor LaToya Cantrell participating in the District A cleanup, marking her personal commitment to the cause.
In recognition of these efforts, a heartfelt thank you was extended to all those involved. The sentiment, shared on the City of New Orleans website, pointed out various key contributors for their support. Councilman Eugene J. Green, Councilman Oliver Thomas, and Chuck Morse, Executive Director of Thrive NOLA with his staff, each received mention for their dedication. The neighborhood associations that took part were equally essential to the successful outcome of the event.
