Newell Brands, a notable player in the consumer goods industry, is shuttering its Kalamazoo design center and relocating operations to the Atlanta area, which houses the company's global headquarters. This move was reported by WOODTV yesterday, and it underscores the company's strides towards consolidating its innovation process within closer proximity of its corporate leadership.

The Kalamazoo facility, opened in 2014 within Western Michigan University's BTR Park, epitomized Newell Brands' focus on product design. While the company has not disclosed the exact number of jobs that will be affected, it has avowed that many Kalamazoo employees will be given the choice to move to Atlanta. "The relocation will happen in phases, and we expect completion by mid-2026. Many of our Kalamazoo employees will have the opportunity to relocate, and we are committed to supporting our impacted employees and those who leave the company with transition support," a corporate spokesperson stated in a release obtained by WWMT News Channel 3.

According to WKZO, the current employee count at the Kalamazoo facility stands at around 100, as part of the wider 24,000-strong global workforce. The company—a conglomeration that includes Sharpie, Rubbermaid, Graco, and Yankee Candle—cited its desire to fuel growth through innovation as the impetus behind this strategic realignment.

In 2017, Newell had received a $1.48 million performance-based grant from the Michigan Business Development Program for an earlier consideration of investing more than $7 million to expand the Kalamazoo center. There were talks of Kalamazoo offering 12-year tax abatements valued at $1.5 million, aligning with the company's plans to create high-paying jobs, as noted by WOODTV. However, this past April saw the Associated Press reporting that Newell's financial projections remained stable even though tariffs on China could have a significant impact on profits.

Established in 1903, Newell Brands has, over the years, cultivated a vast portfolio of consumer brands that have become household names. Post-move, the company aims to channel its resources more holistically towards strengthening its market position, enhancing its brands, and pushing the boundaries of innovation.
