The streets of Norman have experienced an increase in abandoned shopping carts, prompting action from local authorities. The Norman Police Department has received multiple reports of carts left in various locations, including sidewalks and drainage systems. In response, the department has initiated a partnership with Walmart, the primary owner of the carts, to address the situation.
Residents have expressed concerns about abandoned shopping carts contributing to litter accumulation, posing potential health risks, and obstructing stormwater flow in the city's drainage systems. In addition to functional concerns, the carts have also been noted as visual disruptions throughout Norman. To address the issue, Walmart is increasing efforts to retain carts on store property. According to an official press release from the City of Norman, new signage has been installed at store exits and on individual carts, stating that carts are not to be removed from the premises.
Each cart is now marked with identification linking it to Walmart and includes a phone number that residents can use to report carts found off the premises. The intent is to prevent carts from being left in public areas and to ensure their quick return if removed. Possession of a shopping cart off store property violates a city ordinance, and individuals found in violation may be subject to citation and fines.
