A Northern Michigan man faces a slew of charges after a violent chain of events earlier this month, including a home invasion and a subsequent confrontation with law enforcement authorities. According to a press release from the office of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, Darrin Rasheed Martin, 27, of Marion, has been charged with 25 felonies.
The situation unfolded on July 10, when Michigan State Police and the Wexford County Sheriff’s office received multiple 911 calls about an alleged assault and home invasion in Cadillac. After matching the description provided by a witness, a vehicle containing Martin was stopped by the police. At the traffic stop, it is alleged that Martin opened fire on officers before leading them on a high-speed chase, ultimately resulting in a rollover crash off the side of the road. While fleeing on foot into a farm field carrying a pistol, Martin is said to have ignored commands to drop the weapon and pointed it at officers, who then shot him multiple times.
Martin survived his injuries and was administered medical care onsite and later in a hospital. The Department of Attorney General subsequently found the shooting by the Michigan State Police Troopers justified. "These allegations involve not only a home invasion and assault, but an extremely dangerous attempt to evade arrest that risked the lives of law enforcement officers and residents across Wexford and Osceola County roadways," Nessel stated in the press release.
Martin's charges include six counts of Assault with Intent to Murder and one count of First-Degree Home Invasion, among others. Carrying a price for Martin's freedom before his next court appearance on July 31st, a $750,000 cash or surety bond was granted. The range of felonies also comprises weapons-related charges and allegations of resisting and obstructing police officers during the incident.
