The City of Oak Ridge is opening doors for youthful participation in civic engagement, inviting students to apply for roles in the Youth Advisory Board (YAB) and as student representatives on the Environmental Quality Advisory Board (EQAB). With the application process for the 2025-26 school year in full swing, potential candidates must turn in their submissions by August 1, a city announcement stated.

On tap for the upcoming City Council meeting slated for August 11, applicants will have their fate decided. According to the city's announcement, a total of 16 positions are to be filled for the YAB. Students ranging from grades 8 through 12 and living in Oak Ridge are eligible, but they must commit to meeting bi-monthly on Wednesdays at 2 p.m., and show up at special functions throughout the calendar.

The call to action does not end there. Oak Ridge's EQAB is also on the lookout for two student voices to contribute to environmental stewardship on either a 1-year or 2-year term. Here, the commitment involves joining meetings typically scheduled for the first Thursday of each month, come 6 p.m. Interested scholars can access the application online via the City Clerk’s page or pick up a paper copy at their convenience by contacting the Oak Ridge Civic Center.

Boasting an initiative focused on empowering the young voices within the community, the YAB stands as a bridge to the City Council, according to Julie Lee, the Recreation Manager. She affirms that this board is pivotal to "encourage the positive growth and development of youth by involving them in social, cultural, recreational, and other drug-free and alcohol-free activities." Those seeking further enlightenment on the YAB or any aspect of the application process are encouraged to reach out to the City Clerk’s Office or to Lee directly via email or by phone.
