Residents of Oakland County are on alert following a 'stranger danger' incident involving two young children. According to Audacy, Bloomfield Township and Birmingham police departments have issued a lookout for an older, dark-colored pick-up truck after its occupants allegedly motioned to and followed two children on scooters back to their home near Maple Road and west of Chesterfield Avenue.
This incident, which took place on Monday around 1:45 p.m., has prompted an ongoing investigation to identify the men in the truck. Efforts to locate the vehicle, which was last seen in the Bloomfield Village area, have so far been unsuccessful. In response to the incident, authorities are urging the community to stay alert and report any information. Birmingham Police praised the kids for acting cautiously during the encounter. This sentiment was echoed by Bloomfield Township Police Chief James Gallagher in a statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit, who also emphasized the importance of children being aware of their surroundings and being together.
While details on the suspects remain scant, the Bloomfield Township Police Department is actively seeking tips from the public that might help lead to the identification of the individuals involved. Further reporting from ClickOnDetroit also encourages anyone who may have seen something or has information about the incident to come forward.
Chief Gallagher, in his interview with FOX 2 Detroit, laid out several recommendations to enhance children's safety, such as establishing a safety plan for various emergencies, including possible abduction scenarios. "Well the first thing we want to do is we want to encourage our parents to have a conversation with our children," Gallagher stated. He noted the criticality of situational awareness and the benefit of neighbors stepping in if they notice something amiss. "I would say that if somebody see somebody in crisis, and they’re comfortable, obviously 911 is the first call. The faster we’re alerted, the faster we’re all going to get on scene," he advised, stressing not only the quick action of calling for help but also the establishment of a meeting point in case of household emergencies.
As the investigation continues, Birmingham and Bloomfield Township police want to remind all residents to openly discuss proper safety measures with their children, especially those who may venture out without adult supervision. In any case of potentially dangerous or suspicious activities, authorities are urging people to promptly contact the Bloomfield Township Police Department at 248-433-7755 or the Birmingham Police Department at 248-530-1870.
