Ongoing emergency repairs on a crucial 48-inch water main in Oklahoma City are causing significant disruptions, including the closure of May Avenue between Northwest 69th Street and Northwest 72nd Street. According to details shared by OKC's official news announcement, the incident occurred yesterday morning, prompting authorities to advise drivers to seek alternative routes to reach their destinations.
A large portion of customers in north OKC may temporarily have to make do with lower-than-usual water pressure, and service interruptions are also a possibility while the repair work is in progress. Assistant Utilities Director Josh Morgan praised the tireless effort of the Utilities employees and contractors, stating, "Utilities employees and contractors have been working nonstop for more than 24 hours to tackle this complex repair.” He also emphasized their commitment to "get the job done safely and efficiently, while doing everything possible to minimize the impact on our customers," as mentioned on okc.gov.
The Oklahoma City Utilities crews are dealing with a daunting task, owing to factors like the size of the damaged water main and its construction material. Currently, officials have released no estimated timeline for the completion of these repairs. Residents are being kept informed of developments through updates like the one provided by the OKC government.
Once the busted water main is fixed, the road itself will require attention too. The Public Works Department is set to jump in for road repairs after assessing the damage. Officials are hopeful to partially reopen May Avenue to traffic by Monday, July 14, "pending unforeseen challenges," as they've shared in the City of Oklahoma City announcement.
