Oklahoma City is preparing for a hot week as the National Weather Service Norman, OK, has issued a heat advisory in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. CDT today. Heat index values are expected to reach up to 110 degrees. Residents are encouraged to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Today, conditions are forecast to be mostly sunny with a high near 97 degrees and a heat index rising to around 105. Winds will come from the south at a steady 10 mph. Tonight, partly cloudy skies are expected, with temperatures dropping slightly to a warm 79 degrees, and south winds continuing at a similar speed, according to the detailed forecast from the National Weather Service.
Looking ahead, the heat wave is expected to continue, with highs approaching 100 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. Nighttime temperatures will remain warm, dropping only slightly and extending the day's heat well into the evening.
The Weather Service’s precautions emphasize important steps: staying hydrated, spending time in air-conditioned areas, avoiding direct sunlight, and monitoring those who are more vulnerable, such as the elderly and infants. These measures aim to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke across central, east central, northern, northwest, and southeast Oklahoma, as reported by the NWS.
By the end of the week, there is a chance of relief with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms expected starting Friday, which could lower temperatures to the mid-80s by Saturday.
