Norman native and University of Oklahoma graduate Paul Chambers is back in the U.S. after a harrowing experience of false imprisonment in Thailand, just as the nation gears up to celebrate the Fourth of July. Senator Lisa Standridge, R-Norman, held a reception on Friday to honor Chambers' return, as reported by Oklahoma State Senate's press release.

According to the announcement, charges against Chambers for allegedly insulting Thailand's monarchy were later dropped, having been accused earlier this spring. Chambers, who had previously spent decades as a professor and researcher in Thailand, saw his visa and work permit revoked. Following his arrest in April, he was allowed to return to the U.S. after about two months. He reunited with his family in June, before the homecoming celebration attended by Standridge, where she met him for the first time. Having fought tirelessly for justice, his mother, Peggy, and his brother, Kit played a pivotal role in securing his release.

Senator Standridge commented on the significance of the incident, “Paul’s story is chilling and serves as a poignant reminder of the freedoms we often take for granted here in America.” She continued by praising the efforts of Chambers' family: “His safe return would not have been possible without the unwavering determination of his mother, Peggy, and his brother, Kit. Their strength, love and perseverance brought him home,” as mentioned on the Oklahoma Senate website. She also encouraged reflection on the liberties enjoyed in the United States, especially during the Independence Day celebrations.

In a session where feelings were surely high, Chambers shared his newfound appreciation for the freedoms he returned to in the United States. “Having been released from false imprisonment abroad and returned home, I now find myself strongly aware of the freedoms inherent in America, which on Independence Day I strongly celebrate,” Chambers said on Oklahoma Senate, indicating a deeper understanding of what independence means after his ordeal.
