Track and field star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a world-record holder and Olympic gold medalist, has backed out of the Ed Murphey Classic due to a high fever. The event, which took place at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer and Track Complex in Memphis, missed McLaughlin-Levrone's presence yesterday. Despite her anticipation to "get on the line, compete in front of the amazing Memphis fans, and make a real statement as we head toward the heart of the season," as she told Action News 5, McLaughlin-Levrone has chosen to prioritize her health with the 2025 Toyota USATF Outdoor & Para National Championships just on the horizon.
In response to the development, ready to offer support to the phenomenal athlete's decision were the organizers of the Ed Murphey Classic. "We understand why the decision was made and support Sydney and her team fully," Eddie Murphy Jr., President of the Ed Murphey Classic and Ed Murphey Track Club, said in a statement obtained by Local Memphis. The sentiment echoed around the stadium, where fans had been eager to witness a potential national record-breaking performance.
The Ed Murphey Classic still showcased a variety of dynamic performances notwithstanding one of its brightest stars not taking to the track. More than 450 professional athletes, including over 65 Olympians from more than 45 countries participated, according to Local Memphis, demonstrating the depth and international allure of this annual sporting event. With a range of events on the roster, from the pro javelin to the 110m hurdles and pole vault, the Classic ran its course from noon until 9:15 p.m.
The climax of the Ed Murphey Classic saw Quincy Wilson, a rising track and field phenom, shattering the U18 World Record in a spectacle of speed and form. Despite the large shoes unable to be filled by Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, young athletes like Wilson stepped up to the plate, as per a Sportskeeda report, elevating the event's excitement and delivering performances that brought the crowd to its feet.
