Tragedy struck the waters of the Deschutes River near Dillon Falls this past Saturday when a group of six individuals faced the river's treacherous currents. As reported by KATU, three people were rescued while one person was pronounced dead at the scene, igniting a continuing search for the remaining two missing individuals. The first responders arrived at the scene promptly after the Deschutes County 9-1-1 received a call around 2:57 p.m.
The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with Bend Fire & Rescue, took the lead on the multi-agency search operation. Units from the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue (SAR) joined in, while the Bend Police Department dispatched drone resources, and AirLink contributed to the aerial search effort, all in a bid to locate the unaccounted for victims before the day yielded to night.
Three of the six were swiftly transported to St. Charles-Bend for medical attention, as detailed in an article by KPTV. While these individuals' conditions remain undisclosed, the gravity of the situation is under no speculation, with an active search persisting through the waning hours of daylight.
As dusk approached on Saturday, the rescue operations persisted, influenced by the urgency of time and fading light, with the teams committed to scouring the river until sunset, as per details from KOIN. Dive teams and search personnel were compelled by the river's labyrinthine flows and deceptive calm, which had previously claimed a life, in their attempt to bring the remaining two individuals home.
