The PATH train service between Hoboken and New York continues to face delays as repairs remain underway, potentially extending through the Labor Day weekend. Following a derailment on July 12 caused by a faulty track switch, New Jersey Transit and New York Waterway have temporarily agreed to honor PATH fares to assist affected passengers, according to an ABC7 New York report.

The repairs follow the February closure initiated as part of the $31 million rehabilitation project at Hoboken Terminal. The Port Authority emphasized the importance of these repairs, including the replacement and installation of critical interlocking track sections. Port Authority spokesperson Seth Stein told Patch, "Out of an abundance of caution, we are moving trains at slower speeds in and out of Hoboken." While alternative transportation options have been recommended by PATH, commuters continue to experience delays.

Regarding the derailment, Stein said, "Our investigation currently suggests that the derailment may have been caused or exacerbated by the design of a guard rail, a component of the new interlocking installed at Hoboken in February." He added that external experts have been engaged to prevent similar issues in the future, Patch reported.

To ease commuter challenges, PATH has extended access to NJ TRANSIT Rail, NJ TRANSIT Hudson Bergen Light Rail, and New York Waterway through Friday. These measures aim to provide additional travel options while repairs continue.
