In a recent sentencing, Marquavious Rashawn Manning, 22, from Perry, was sentenced to 15 years following a guilty plea to false imprisonment charges. Manning, who was already out on bond for a firearms offense at the time of the attack, will serve the first 10 years of his sentence in prison, according to the Houston County District Attorney's Office, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The assault, which took place last December, left the pregnant victim with severe injuries including a busted lip, a broken nose, and marks indicative of strangulation. Manning's rage reportedly ignited upon viewing a text message from a male friend of the victim's sister, which led to his accusations of infidelity and a subsequent brutal attack. During the drive to Perry, the victim was punched, strangled, and after arriving at an apartment complex on Kings Chapel Road, her phone was smashed and she was assaulted again, FOX 5 Atlanta informed.
Despite the earlier charges, Manning's violence escalated, culminating in the arrest following the domestic assault. The ordeal only ended after the victim managed to escape in her vehicle. Details provided by 41NBC describe how authorities found the victim in need of stitches, a fact that underscores the severity of Manning's physical assault. The incident occurred while Manning was traveling with the victim from Montezuma to Perry.
Expressing the consequences of disregarding warning signs of domestic violence, District Attorney Eric Edwards made a statement emphasizing the community's troubling encounters with such violence. “This year, our community has seen firsthand the deadly consequences of ignoring the warning signs of domestic violence. The facts of this case are horrifying and all the more tragic because they reflect a pattern we’ve seen too often: escalating violence and a victim trying to survive. This defendant beat, strangled, and terrorized a pregnant woman while he was already out on bond for pointing a loaded gun in someone’s face. There is no excuse, and there will be no tolerance. This office is fully committed to holding abusers accountable, and to supporting our law enforcement partners in using every available tool to prevent the next tragedy before it happens.” This statement was corroborated by 41NBC's reporting.
