U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Philadelphia have recently thwarted an attempted exportation of hallucinogenic mushrooms disguised as sweets, halting more than just a 'trip' meant for Spain. The parcel, originating from California, was packed with over 12 pounds of psilocybin mushroom edibles, including gummies, chocolates, and capsules disguised as "supplements."

Leading to the seizure on Tuesday, the contents of the express consignment raised suspicion based on their packaging, which bore the false label of dietary supplements. Field tests of the samples confirmed the presence of psilocybin, a controlled substance known for its powerful psychedelic effects. In total, the officers discovering 50 packages of gummies, 40 chocolate bars, and 10 packages of capsules, according to the CBP's press release.

Cleatus P. Hunt, Jr., the Area Port Director for CBP's Area Port of Philadelphia, stated that their officers are unwavering in their commitment to intercept dangerous drugs. "Customs and Border Protection officers aren’t altering our mindset when it comes to intercepting dangerous drugs, especially psychedelic drugs masquerading as less-threatening gummies and chocolates," he said, as mentioned in the same press release. CBP's diligence aims to stem the flow of illegal substances trafficked through the nation's ports of entry, disrupting the operations of drug trafficking organizations.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has categorized psilocybin mushrooms amongst the most potent of hallucinogens. The agency warns that the usage of such substances can lead to serious physical and psychological complications. These include, but are not limited to; nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, lack of coordination, panic reactions and hallucinations that blur the line between reality and fantasy. In extreme cases, challenging experiences, psychosis, and possible death have been recorded due to the use of Psilocybin mushrooms.
