Philadelphia's streets have been clouded by an act of violence following the arrest of Naeem Morgan, 27, linked to attacks on unhoused individuals. According to NBC Philadelphia, Morgan was apprehended and charged after a video posted on July 4 showed someone yelling at and assaulting six apparently unhoused people.
The assailant in the widely circulated video chose the city's streets as his stage for this display of indifference, picking up objects to throw at those whose circumstances already left them vulnerable. Morgan, who is now facing charges of simple assault, possessing instruments of crime, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct, and harassment, was arrested in a home in North Philadelphia, as reported by 6abc.
In response to the events, figures from local aid organizations have voiced their concern and distress. Barry Martin, the program director at St. John's Hospice, told 6abc, "Where is our humanity? Where is the heart that we are supposed to carry with us as we walk around this city?" St. John's Hospice serves a vital role in the community, feeding 300 men, women, and children every day, and they have been actively engaged in discussions with officials to address the rising number of unhoused individuals in the city.
The incident near the Philadelphia Convention Center, where belongings were thrown at people experiencing homelessness, marks a stark contrast to the outreach efforts of organizations such as St. John's. A shelter resident, hoping for justice, expressed a somber wish to the same publication: "I just hope they catch him and get him off the street. Let him go sit somewhere and think about it," Jowon Dorbor from Smyrna, Del., articulated the collective dismay to 6abc, noting the disturbing nature of the video and the universal vulnerability to sudden changes in life, "You don't know how they got to that point because anybody's life can literally change in a heartbeat like that. It's inhumane."
