Last week's fatal shooting of a man by Philadelphia police after he allegedly fired at officers has prompted an ongoing investigation and scrutiny. Four officers were responding to a report of a man with a gun when shots were fired at them from a fenced-in lot next to the home they approached, per details from NBC Philadelphia. The officers, named as Maria Mairone, Scottie Martinez, Ryan Perez, and Carl Szylejko, were forced to take cover behind a patrol car as more shots rang out from inside the property. The situation escalated when Sosa allegedly emerged from the home, continuing the fire at police officers.
In the ensuing confrontation, Sosa entered the driver's seat of an unoccupied police vehicle and attempted to flee while firing at the officers. Police returned fire, ultimately leading to Sosa's fatal injury. As reported by The Inquirer, a Smith & Wesson 9MM handgun, loaded with two live rounds and a fired cartridge casing in the chamber, was recovered from the scene, alongside an additional fired cartridge casing from inside the vehicle.
