A youth hockey match at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center turned aggressive when Andrea Bucci, a hockey mom, was accused of assaulting a 16-year-old referee who had ejected her son from the game. According to WTAE, the incident occurred last Sunday when the referee removed Bucci’s son for unsportsmanlike conduct after what he ruled as a blindsiding hit on an opposing team player.
This altercation resulted in charges against Bucci for assault on a sports official, simple assault, harassment, and disorderly conduct. Court documents reveal that after the teen made the call to eject her son, Andrea Bucci reportedly grabbed the young referee by his shirt and spewed profanities. As the game concluded, both Andrea and her husband, Michael Bucci, apparently lunged at the referee in a display of intimidation. While Andrea Bucci faces multiple charges, Michael Bucci has not been charged in the incident.
Robert Morris University Campus Police were summoned to the scene to address the conflict between Bucci and the teenage official. "The Bucci family is no longer permitted at the Island Sports Center," a court document specified, as stated in court records obtained by WTAE.
Further expanding on the broader issues of parental behavior in youth sports, Jason Caruso, a youth sports referee, noted, "The biggest thing is they probably don't know the rules of the game or laws or how the game is played." Caruso's statement, cited by CBS News Pittsburgh, alludes to a troubling trend where parental engagement crosses the line into outright aggression, fueled by a lack of understanding of the game's regulations.
