The City of Plano is calling on those with a desire to serve to step forward, as it announces an opportunity to join the ranks of its fire department. The Plano Fire-Rescue will hold its civil service entrance examination for the position of Firefighter coming July 17. Aspiring candidates should be prepared for a prompt check-in at 8:00 a.m. at the Plano Event Center, located at 2000 East Spring Creek Pkwy, as the doors close for entry at 9:00 a.m., sharp.
In a release published on June 30th, specific criteria set forth by the City of Plano Fire Fighters' and Police Officers' Civil Service Commission and the Texas Local Government Code were made public. Applicants must be between 18 to 35 years of age on the day of testing, with proof of legal eligibility to work in the U.S., and specifically, within the State of Texas. Communication skills are key, as they must be able to read, write, and speak English.
The educational prerequisites echo the seriousness of the role. Before the first day of employment, candidates are expected to have a high school diploma or equivalent, alongside certifications as a "structural fire fighter" from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and as an EMT-Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Interested individuals can apply on the City of Plano employment website or Plano Fire-Rescue's portal till 11:59 p.m. CT on July 6.
Veterans seeking to serve in a new capacity have the opportunity to earn additional consideration. Those who score at least 70 on the written exam and possess an "honorable" discharge can receive a five-point boost, provided they submit a photocopy of the DD214, undeleted with sections 23-30, before the start of the exam. Post the written test, candidates who make the grade will face the physical agility challenge, which is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m. on the same day of the exam and continue over the following two days, depending on the weather.
