A 17-year-old teen in Pontiac, Michigan, is facing charges of second-degree murder and other felony offenses after a shooting incident claimed the life of 18-year-old Omarrel Sahon Ford Jr. and injured a 19-year-old man. The shooting took place on Tuesday near West South Boulevard and Highland Avenue, as reported by local news outlets. CBS News Detroit confirmed that, aside from the murder charge, the teen is also charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felony firearms, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
While the accused is a minor, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office has designated him as an adult in this case, although he will be tried in family court, according to The Detroit News. Scheduled for July 24, a preliminary examination will determine if the teen, whose name has not been disclosed due to his age, will face an adult sentence if convicted.
In addition to the teenager charged, four teens were initially taken into custody in connection with the incident. However, officials expect to release the other three teens, ages 13, 15, and 16, pending further investigation. "My heart goes out to Omarrel Sahon Ford's family as they grieve for his loss," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald said in a statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit. She further emphasized the community's need for safety and the necessity for conflicts to be resolved without violence.
At the scene of the crime, first responders discovered Ford Jr. with a gunshot wound to his chest, while the other victim underwent surgery at a local hospital and is expected to make a recovery. Found lying in a vacant field, the first responders attempted life-saving measures until the medics arrived, but Ford Jr. could not be saved.
