The Portland Bureau of Transportation is updating its rules for sidewalk development. Changes are being made to TRN-1.22, which covers infill development on streets with existing sidewalks, and TRN-1.29, which focuses on sidewalk widths in Historic Overlay Zones. These updates reflect changes in how the city manages sidewalk standards and development, according to the City of Portland.
Portland Bureau of Transportation is combining two guidelines, TRN 1.29 and TRN 1.22, to simplify sidewalk regulations. Sidewalks that are close to standard width and part of a consistent block pattern may remain as they are, even in areas with higher zoning density. Some employment zones will now be included in the exemptions. The change is meant to make requirements clearer, especially in historic areas, by having a single set of rules for sidewalk design, as reported by the City of Portland.
Portland Bureau of Transportatio is introducing a new sidewalk design standard, P-553, for areas with narrow planting strips to allow space for trees and reduce sidewalk damage. The public can submit comments by email to [email protected] until 5 p.m. on September 5. A virtual public hearing will be held if requested by September 4. If there is not enough interest, the hearing will be canceled and a notice will be posted. The changes will take effect two weeks after they are adopted, as stated by the City of Portland.
