As the summer heatwave hits, where better to cool off than at Pier Pool? The much-loved local gem in Portland's St. Johns neighborhood has finally reopened its gates to swathes of eager swimmers ready to dive back into its rejuvenated waters after being shuttered for significant repairs. Last year, the facility was plagued with issues attributable to its aging infrastructure that led to its untimely closure, according to the City of Portland.
The necessary mending was no small feat, the repair bill soared to about $700,000 for construction alone, not factoring in the additional expenses for design work, however, thanks to secured funding, public pools are a testament to the vibrant community life and Portlanders can once again enjoy their local aquatic haven, which now boasts a series of significant upgrades.
Among the bevy of renovations, the 1940s-era pool underwent extensive plumbing work, including the replacement of the outdated pipes and pool boilers, overall, the preservation efforts covered a wide gamut of restoration tasks, from sealing up unseemly cracks and joints to halting the troubling water leaks that had initially prompted the closure to sprucing up the pool deck with necessary concrete repairs and improving the drainage system aimed at curbing water wastage, not to mention the entire pool and perimeter fence wall received a fresh coat of paint, heralding a new lease on life for the old facility.
